The Story of Jasmine Tea
Long
long ago, there was a tea trader in Beijing,
his name was Chen Gu-chiu. One day, he was
talking with a tea master in a tea house. He
remembered he had a small bag of tea from a
young girl, but he had never got a chance to
try it. Therefore he invited the tea master
to try this tea with him together. When they
put the tea inside hot water, they smelt a
strong aroma which was different from any
other tea. Suddenly there was a illusion
inside the steam: they could see a beautiful
young girl holding a bundle of jasmine
flower. Chen was astonished and asked the
tea master about this tea. The tea master
said this must be the top grade
"Gratitude Tea", so Chen told him the story
of the tea: Three years ago Chen went to
South China to purchase tea. One day, when
he was sitting in a small inn, he hear the
crying of a young girl. This girl had just
lost his father but she did not have enough
money to bury his father. Chen gave her some
pieces of silver to arrange the funeral.
Three years after when he went to the same
inn again, the waiter gave him a small bag
of tea and said that was the gift from the
young girl. He did not realize that it was a
treasured tea. But why did the girl hold
jasmine flowers in her hand? Chen and the
tea master reckoned that this must be the
instruction from the Tea Goddess: Jasmine
can be used to make scent tea. Next summer
Chen Gu-chiu started to mix jasmine and tea
together to make scent tea and he got great
success in his business. Ever since then the
jasmine tea has been more and more popular
in China. Nowadays, jasmine tea is the major
scent tea for the Chinese people.
