Famous Zi Sha Makers in the Period of the Republic of China (1911-1949)

 

Huang Yulin Wang Yinchun Wang Shigeng
Pei Shimin Wu Yungeng Ren Ganting

 

Huang Yulin

Huang started learning Zisha skill when he was only thirteen. His Zisha products were accurate and neat, especially good at the color choice. He had a great
achievement on making the traditional famous tea pot designs such as Gongchun Pot and Fish Transforming to Dragon Pot, but he also created potted miniature
landscape with Zisha. His miniature landscape usually had lofty hills, waterfall, bridges and small houses. During his late time he spent a long time on
every products and the collectors spent a great money on his tea pots and landscapes.

Wang Yinchun (1897-1977)

Wang Yinchun became an apprentice of Zisha master Jin Ahshou in 1910. Three years later he finished his study and worked as a Zisha worker. At the age of 24 he moved to his hometown Zhenjiang and opened his own Zisha workshop. He got well-known gradually and many customers in Shanghai liked to order his products. The famous artist Pan Zhiliang designed and made a stamp for his with his name on. He used this stamp on the bottom of his products for the whole life.


Wang Yinchun's workshop was very productive in the 1930's and 1940's. In 1954 he joined the government's pottery joint venture. Wang designed many new Zisha
utilities during his life, such as the 13-piece coffee set, plum flower tea set and so on. Many of them have been well handed down.


Wang Shigeng

Wang Shigeng was born in a Zisha maker's family in 1924. His father is the famous Zisha master Wang Yinchun. Wang Shigeng was well trained by his father and
learned all the Zisha making skills. For many years Wang Shigeng acted as the QA director of his Zisha factory, until he retired in 1984, when he was already
60 years old, he started to design and make Zisha pots. His products were highly evaulated by the international pottery market. He has also won many awards
in different kinds of exhibitions.



Pei Shimin (1892-1979)

Pei Shimin started to learn Zisha skills when he was 14 years old. At the age of 22 he was hired by the Liyong Pottery Company and became more and more famous. In 1926 he moved to Shanghai and his products were called "Wuqi Pot" because of the stamp on the bottom and treasured by the collectors. After the outbreak of Sino-Japan war he moved back to YiXing and opened his own workshop in 1940. Pei Shimin liked small animals and many of his tea pots resembled the animals and plants with a very interesting and vivid outlook.



Wu Yungen

Wu Yungen liked to use bamboo to inspire his Zisha design. Many of his tea pots were designed as bamboos. Besides bamboo, he also used some other objects such as persimmon or cloud. His products had been exhibited in many exhibitions and won him lots of awards.


Ren Ganting (1889-1968)

Ren Ganting was born in a scholar's family. His family was very poor but he was diligent and smart. In 1904 he started to learn Zisha making in Yixing. He
was good at Zisha carving. Ren Ganting was also very skilled at painting, such as landscape, flowers and birds, people and calligraphy. He used his painting
skills on the Zisha carving. His most famous skill was using two hands to draw two pictures at the same time.
