Song Dynasty (960-1279)

Height: 9 cm Diameter: 19.5 cm

Zhadou, also called the spit box, was actually used as garbage bin in the Song Dynasty. It was used to hold the spit, or for the food residue such as fish bones on the dining table. Some small Zhadou was also used for the remains of tea, that's why it is also considered as tea equipment sometimes.

Zhadou was produced in many kilns in the Song Dynasty, such as the Yue Kiln, Yaozhou Kiln, Guan Kiln. In the Ming and Qing Dynasty it was also produced in kilns such as the Jingdezhen Kiln.

This Zhadou was made at the Jingdezhen Kiln in the Song Dynasty. It was decorated with lotus leaves, lotus flower and water waves. It was coated in light green glaze.

Zhadou could also be made from silver or lacquer.
