"The
Tea Party at Mount HuiShan"
Wen ZhengMing, Ming Dynasty
Wen
ZhengMing (1470-1559)
was the great master of "Wu Style" painting
in
the
Ming Dynasty. Born in SuZhou City, he tried to get a position
as a government officer when he was young but did not succeed,
so he dedicated himself to the art of painting and calligraphy,
finally became the famous painter in China. He was also good at
hand writing and poem, but most well-known by his great painting
skills. He lived to the age of 90 years old, with many pictures
left. He was honored as the Four Great Masters in the Ming
Dynasty with Shen Zhou, Tang Yin and Qiu Ying.
"The Tea Party at Mt. Huishan"
depicts a scene of the tea party between scholars in
the
Ming
Dynasty. It is a valuable documentation for the tea culture in
the
Ming dynasty. Mt. HuiShan is a famous resort in WuXi city,
JiangSu Province. There
were four masters and three servants in
this picture. One people was watching the water to be used for
the tea soup, one reading a book, the other two
were talking on
the pavement. The servants
were busy preparing the tea party. On
the day of QingMing Festival in 1518, Wen ZhengMing went to
Mt. HuiShan with his best friends Cai Yu, Tang Zhen, Wang Shou
and Wang Chong, they made poems and enjoyed the fresh tea for the
whole day. This picture recorded the scenario on that day and
also reflected the life style of
the
Ming people.
